Sometimes you will heard a bubbling noise from your toilet but no one is using the toilet or toilet bubbling when showering. You may wonder: why is my toilet bubbling and my toilet bubbling and shower slow draining ? Before you are going to call a plumber, maybe you can do the job by yourself.
Normally, There are two possible causes that make the toilet bubbling randomly.
1.Clogged sewer drain line
2.Blocked vent stack
Let’s use the diagram to show why toilet bubbling up.
1. Clogged sewer drain pipe
Check out this image:
If the drain pipe in the bottom left usually is clogged, water will return to the lowest drain, in this case, that is your toilet. That backing up of water is causing the bubbling/gurgling noise.
Causes of a blocked sewer drain pipe include:
- Tree roots (trees planted over the drain line love to invade nutrient-rich drain lines with their roots)
- Odd items flushed down the toilet
How to fix a clogged drain line
Unclogging a drain line depends on the cause of the clog and how far down the clog is. Here are some skills that you can do before calling a professional plumber:
- Use a plumber’s snake (also called an auger) on your toilet drain. If this does not work, the clog may be too far down the drain line.
- Use a plumbers snake at the sewer clean out. To find the sewer clean out, look around the sides of your home.
2.Blocked vent stack
The vent stack is a pipe that rises from your plumbing system and out through your roof. Its job is to keep nasty sewer gas from backing up into your home and helps water in your plumbing flow smoothly.
Let’s look at the above picture.
Think of this vent stack as a straw in a glass of water. As long as the top of the straw is clear, water flows freely. But if you put your thumb over the top of the straw and take it out of the water, the water stays in the straw and does not flow. That means if the vent stack is blocked by a bird’s nest, water in your plumbing won’t flow freely and air will return to your plumbing. That air will try to escape somewhere (In this case, your toilet).
In another words, why is my toilet bubbling when i take a shower is one of clogged vent stack symptoms.
How to fix clogged vent stack
If you’re feeling brave, get a ladder and head up to your roof to see if the plumbing vent is obstructed. Remove the things that block the air flow in the vent stack. It is a good way to save your money and solve the issue why your toilet bubbling.
